– three housing studies in Kvadraturen

The project explores the interconnection between residents in the dense city structure of Kvadraturen in Oslo.

Although Kvadraturen is largely made up of unique historic buildings, we believe the area is best preserved through transformation. There is a conflict between the terms “preserving” and “transforming”, however, it is precisely Kvadraturen ́s ability to adapt to changing conditions that makes up its identity.

Today the area is abandoned by people a large portion of the day and strict rules of preservation freezes Kvadraturen in time. Housing is a key factor in revitalizing Kvadraturen, and in the three case studies we propose transformation of office space to housing.

Compact city blocks with small courtyards imply closeness. How can this be used to create a greater sensibility between neighbours? The project explores the interconnection between residents in five arenas: the courtyard, the balcony, the stair, the corridor and the window.
