Design for intellectual disability
Socially interact by exploring senses
Intellectual Disability is an umbrella term over disabilities characterised by significant limitations, both in intellectual functioning, such as reasoning, learning and problem solving. Also in adaptive behaviour, which covers a range of everyday social skills.
This master thesis is working with how to motivate young children with intellectual disabilities to socially interact with each other in a kindergarten environment. By doing this, the focus have been on giving the children positive cooperation experiences to increase self-esteem and reduce passivity.
The result is Explore, which enables many functions to give the children opportunities to explore their senses together with others during physical activity. The children are able to put Explore into different positions and change its appearance by interchangeable cushions.
