Communication in risk intense work environments
At Borregaard biorefinery a centralized control room operates 15 high-risk process facilities. To maintain safety, accuracy and efficiency at such operations it’s important to provide efficient communication between control room operators and field operators.
I have explored how interaction design can improve communication by offering an enhanced contextual understanding between operators by particularly focusing on control room interfaces. By having extensive access to Borregaard’s control room I have carried out a human centered design process based on extensive observations and user involvement from a broad range of end users.
The outcome is a collaboration tool that allows the control room operators to receive real-time media, get critical alarms concerning field operators and local community, view locations on a facility map and always have full overview and access to call functions in order to obtain situational awareness. The solution will contribute to a more secure, efficient and pleasant handling of communication.
