Exploring the possibilities in contemporary psychiatric institutions
Studies in architecture and treatment, society and power led us early on, to investigate and identify a contemporary vision of psychiatric architecture; the investigations into the historical and political context of psychiatry pointed us in the direction of a realistic and contemporary project for a psychiatric institution.
The project we have made is a district psychiatric centre. Thousands of people use the psychiatric healthcare services each year. Most of the treatment happens in the 78 district psychiatric centres placed around the country.
The project has been developed at from two angles. One is the current status of Norwegian psychiatric healthcare ideology and the other is based on an analysis of the current status of the district psychiatric centres. Many of the problems and conflicts in the field are related to space and could benefit from an architectural solution.
